“We Are Rabbis for Human Rights-North America” Campaign
Rabbis for Human Rights-North America inspires, challenges, and supports rabbis in bringing a Jewish moral voice to human rights issues in Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and North America. When rabbis speak out on these issues, their voices reverberate in the Jewish community and beyond.
At the same time, human rights remains a taboo subject in many Jewish communities. While rabbis theoretically enjoy freedom of the pulpit, they face increasing pressure to avoid potentially-divisive topics. Rabbis yearn for a supportive community of colleagues who share their dedication to creating a more just world. Moreover, rabbis seek assistance in crafting sophisticated messages that bring an authentic Jewish voice to pressing human rights concerns. Rabbis and communities also seek ways to respond to the horrendous abuses that they hear about in the news.
The “We Are Rabbis for Human Rights-North America” Campaign demonstrates that clergy and lay Jewish activists who identify with and support the work of Rabbis for Human Rights-North America are not alone and are not afraid to speak out for justice. Rabbis for Human Rights-North America models a Judaism that is relevant, morally demanding, and sensitive to the rights of people of all religions and ethnicities.
Through Rabbis for Human Rights-North America, more than 1800 rabbis have taken action to stop human rights abuses affecting Jews, Palestinians, Israeli Arabs, and foreign workers in Israel and the Palestinian Territories; to end United States-sponsored torture; to halt human trafficking in North America; and to advocate for fair trials for Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Rabbis for Human Rights-North America is the only organization that brings together Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, Renewal, and non-denominational rabbis to work on social justice issues. We are not afraid to speak out on the most controversial moral questions of the moment.
