Congregational Program Resources

K'vod Habriot logoK'vod Habriot congregations are encouraged to do public programs to raise awareness about the problem of U.S.-sponsored torture and to educate others about the connections between Judaism and human rights. Here are some current and ongoing programs and advocacy opportunities:

Programs

Hang a Stop Torture banner.

Screen the film "Ghosts of Abu Ghraib" in your community. Discussion material is available.

Bring a torture survivor to speak in your community. The Torture Abolition and Survivor Support Coalition can help you to find a speaker. Hearing first hard from a survivor is a powerful way to put a face on this issue and recommit yourself to the work. They also have a documentary available on DVD for $25 called "Breaking the Silence: Torture Survivors Speak Out." The film is based on more than 40 interviews conducted by Terry Coonan and Valliere Richard Auzenne with members of TASSC -- survivors of torture from around the world. Throughout the film, the survivors recount both their torture and the emotional healing begun through TASSC. If you would like a documentary, please send TASSC an email.

Observe Torture Awareness Month. Great resources that can be utilized all year!

Use one of our wonderful High Holiday sermons or prayers.

Advocacy

Endorse the interfaith Campaign Against Torture, which is calling for an executive order outlawing torture.
