NYC event on August 13th: A Conversation with the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel

Join the New Israel Fund and Rabbis for Human Rights-North America for:

Crisis and Conscience:  Condoning Torture for the Greater Good?
A conversation with Louis Frankenthaler of the Public Committee against Torture in Israel
Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 7:00 pm - New Israel Fund - 330 7th Avenue (at 29th Street) - 11th floor, New York, NY

The prohibition against slavery, racial discrimination and torture are among the most basic commitments of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Faced with new challenges stemming from terrorism, the world's leading democracies have been struggling to balance legal and extra-legal means of interrogating detainees with their commitments to human rights. In the case of both the United States and Israel, unique national defense arguments are increasingly used as a justification for the certain sacrifices of human rights and democratic values.

Join us for an interview and discussion with Louis Frankenthaler, Director of Development and International Outreach at the Public Committee against Torture in Israel (PCATI).   Rabbi Rachel Kahn-Troster of Rabbis for Human Rights-North America will interview Mr. Frankenthaler and moderate a discussion about the consequences of torture and detainee abuse in the United States and Israel, and steps being taken in both countries to protect basic human rights.
Please RSVP at www.nif.org/events by the morning of Wednesday, August 13th - or contact us at ny@nif.org or 212.613.4400
